Biography

Dr. Asimina Mataftsi was born in Thessaloniki, Greece in 1973. She graduated from School of Medicine, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1997 and pursued her residency training in Ophthalmology in Jules Gonin Eye Hospital in Lausanne, Switzerland, as well as Kingston and Guildford Hospitals in the U.K. She completed her PhD in Lausanne University and Master’s diploma in Strabismus at Nantes University, France. Subsequently, she undertook paediatric ophthalmology fellowships at St Helier’s University Hospital and at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, and finally a research fellowship in oculogenetics in Lausanne and in Sion, Switzerland. In 2009, she was appointed lecturer, in 2014 assistant professor (non-tenure) and in 2019 associate professor in Ophthalmology-Paediatric Ophthalmology-Strabismus in the School of Medicine, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She teaches ophthalmology and paediatric ophthalmology to undergraduate and postgraduate students, and has organized relevant seminars for paediatricians and ophthalmologists.

Dr. Mataftsi is an active clinician and surgeon, with a parallel and interconnected academic work. She has written 3 chapters in books and published 66 papers in international journals with more than 420 references. She was an invited speaker in more than 30 Greek and 15 international congresses and seminars. She has been a reviewer in 10 international medical journals, reviewer of applications for scholarships by the National Institute of Scholarships and she’s a member of the Editorial Board in one international journal. Her research interests include retinopathy of prematurity, methodology in ophthalmic examination, and high refractive error in children.
